Speel Maar
Location: Stadhuis Amersfoort, stadhuisplein 1
Date: 19 June 2026 - 11 October 2026
A gentle reminder of what we have in common.

Knikkeren, touwtrekken, vliegeren.

Ying Yi Wu in front of Stadhuis Amersfoort
Playing marbles, tug-of-war, and flying kites. These are timeless games that everyone knows, regardless of their background. For me, that was already a nice reason to choose this as the subject for a work on the facade of the city hall in Amersfoort.
Commissioned by the Municipality of Amersfoort, curated by Carlien Lammers and Renee Schuiten. Inspired by the theme 'connection between people', my grand site-specific exhibition Speel Maar unfolds in Amersfoort City Hall.
After a pleasant conversation with Marjolein Sponselee, Marjolein wrote a piece about Speel Maar that was published in Lucy in de lucht.
"By enlarging the collages to the size of the facade, many extra details become visible. The veins of a leaf, how it is sometimes semi-transparent, and how it folds. It is wondrous what nature can create. Look, for example, at the winding rope of the swing, made from the spirals with which the passion flower attaches itself. A special element is the kite, which is based on the traditional craft of Swallow kites made in Beijing. Ying Yi enjoys working with botanical materials; they can be found everywhere, they smell nice, and it requires no intensive physical labor. For her, making art is not just about the visual result, but also about how it smells and feels during the making process."
