Eet Maar

Exploring the differences in eating habits between China and the Netherlands, as well as the chemistry between porcelain and botanics.

Food is part of our daily rituals and is essential fuel for our body and mind. What our caregivers brought to our dining table as children and what we take care of ourselves as adults all have to do with the so-called food culture.

But what does food culture entail?
Does it have anything to do with the local landscape?
What are the influences from the past and present?

For years, I've observed the difference in eating habits between the Netherlands and China, and I find it fascinating that this universal daily routine can sometimes lead to completely different ways. By exploring the differences in eating habits between China and the Netherlands, I've created a series of (9) artworks (≈ Φ 20 cm each one) to make this subject tangible and enrich my botanical art practice with the earthy material: porcelain.

As an artist specializing in botanical art, I embody humor in portraying the contrast with botanical materials such as (dried) flowers, leaves, vegetables, and seeds. With (unglazed) freshly fired porcelain as a canvas, I illustrate the layered culture into both visual impression and scent experience. The porcelain is handmade specially to complement the whole storyline.

During the exhibition of 'Makers van Nu - de Amersfoortse Biënnale', this series of works could be both viewed closely and smelled through.

"Eet Maar" (Flitsimpuls makers en talent 2025) is made possible with the support of the Municipality of Amersfoort.
