EaT mY arT | Situation Art | Sensory Experience | Osmanthus | Uitfeest Utrecht

'EaT mY arT’ (EN/NL/CN) is a drop-by experience with storytelling about youth, heritage, and food. I incorporate the stories from my youth about Osmanthus(桂花) into handmade snacks and drinks. Visitors can navigate through the menu and are invited to get to know the stories through tasting and conversation.

Observation/After-thought

After countless conversations with the drop-by tasters, I feel the urgency to further elaborate on the situational approaches of 'EaT mY arT' that reflect on my youth, memory, and food art. But first, I will serve some fun facts.

  • 'Osmanthus tea' and 'Osmanthus wanzi' are the most popular ones.
  • Only two visitors recognize the smell of Osmanthus.
  • 'Thousand years Osmanthus tea egg' is the most provoking one.
  • One visitor asks if he can order the same food somewhere else.



IS IT ART?

I am glad that some of the visitors question me directly if it is art. It gives space for us to go into a mutual conversation that could lead to resourceful reflection on the definition of art.

🐒 My reaction goes for a big YES. I perceive art in sensory dimensions that are not limited to visual appreciation or attractions. Food is the whole embracement of our senses. I spend a ritualistic time in the kitchen and an interactive time behind my food installation, new meanings, and relationship have been contextualised with the main character ‘Osmanthus'.

I employ situational approaches and create timely-based mutual experiences that draw attention to the stories of Osmanthus. Yet, everyone reserves their personal reception and memory.

To quote the words from an enthusiastic taster. "They're created in a situation, presented in a situation, then form a new situation with her."
